This page explains what happens to your personal data when you read Hub Curious (hubcurious.com). The short version: the site has no accounts, no comments, no newsletter and no advertising trackers of its own. A few outside services do receive some technical data, and they are all listed below.
Who is responsible
Hub Curious is a personal, independent website run by N.L. in Riga, Latvia, who is the data controller for this site. You can reach me through the contact page.
What the site itself records
- Clicks on outside links. When you click a link that leads to another website, the site notes the link address, the link text, the page you were on and the time. No IP address, cookie or other identifier is saved with it, so a click cannot be traced back to you. I use these counts to see which recommendations are useful.
- No cookies for readers. The site does not set cookies for its visitors. The only cookie it uses is a sign-in cookie for the site owner in the private admin area.
- Search. What you type into the site search is used to find matching stories and is not saved.
- Sign-in protection. If someone tries to sign in to the admin area, their IP address is kept for a short time to block password guessing.
Hosting
The site, its database and its images are hosted by Cloudflare. To deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested. This is necessary to run the site (legitimate interest, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare may handle this data outside the European Union under the safeguards described in the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links: if you book or buy something through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you (see the Affiliate Disclosure). They are ordinary links managed through the affiliate network Travelpayouts. Nothing is loaded from Travelpayouts while you read.
Only when you click such a link do you pass through a short Travelpayouts redirect to the partner website, for example Airalo or GetTransfer. At that moment Travelpayouts and the partner receive technical data such as your IP address, and they may set cookies on their own websites to credit a booking to this site. How they handle data is described in the privacy policy on the Travelpayouts website and in the privacy policies of those companies.
YouTube videos
Stories with a video show a preview image loaded from YouTube, so Google, which owns YouTube, receives your IP address when such a page opens. The video player itself loads only after you press play, in YouTube privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). From then on the Google privacy policy applies.
Links to social networks
Links to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube are plain links. Nothing is sent to those networks unless you click one and open their website, where their own privacy policies apply.
Emails
If you write to me, I use your email address and message only to reply, and I delete the conversation when it is no longer needed.
Managing cookies
You can block or delete cookies, including third-party cookies, in your browser settings. The site works without them, although a partner may then be unable to credit a booking to this site.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format. This site itself stores almost no personal data, so requests about data held by Cloudflare, Travelpayouts, Google or a booking site are best sent to those companies directly. You can also lodge a complaint with the Latvian Data State Inspectorate (Datu valsts inspekcija, dvi.gov.lv).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date at the top.
